Growth Calling From the
Syracuse Post-Standard October 02, 2007: In today's fast-paced, technology-oriented marketplace, one might not think there was money to be made in used phones. But a start-up company in DeWitt is making a business out of them. Allegretto Funding Group Inc., doing business as Infinit Technology Solutions, refurbishes phones coming off corporate leases and sells or re-leases them. Infinit, which also sells refurbished networking switches, servers, routers and personal computers, started up in January 2006 and employs 32 people. The company quickly outgrew its first home, a 6,000-square-foot warehouse on Corporate Circle. Last month, it moved into a 20,000-square-foot facility at 6477 Ridings Road in DeWitt. Infinit had revenues of $7.3 million last year, said Anthony Cerrone, president and managing partner. Its revenue goal for this year is $11 million, he said. The privately held company does not release profit figures. The company takes in digital phones, replaces their handsets and buttons with new ones, rubs and buffs them until they shine and then tests them to make sure they work properly. Cerrone said the phones never really go out of date, just the software that runs them. So, if necessary, Infinit installs new software to fit the needs of whoever is going to lease them next, he said. When Infinit is done with them, the phones look and work like they are brand-new. They cost customers a fraction of what a new phone would cost about $150 versus the approximately $450 the phones cost new. Cerrone said the company started out just servicing used phones for leasing companies, charging a fee for cleaning and testing them. It still does that, but it also acquires phones coming off leases and leases them out itself, he said. Much of Infinit's marketing is Web-based. Its Web site, www.infinit tech.com, which receives 150 unique visits a day, generates most of its leads. Though Infinit still cold-calls potential customers, that's not its primary way of drumming up business. Instead, it buys ads on the Google search engine to drive traffic to its Web site. "It's a huge tool for us, for all of our sales people," said Kevin Schaffner, business development manager. "Dialing for dollars just doesn't work anymore." Cerrone said 95 percent of its sales are to customers from outside of the Syracuse area, including to the United Kingdom, Ecuador and other countries. Infinit's sales strategy goes beyond creating a Web site, however. Before leasing anything, sales personnel talk to customers to determine their total phone, networking and other equipment needs and then suggest solutions, Cerrone said. When a customer needs something that Infinit does not have, it will go to other equipment providers to get it for them. Cerrone calls the approach being a sort of "general contractor." "You want to brand yourself the solutions seller," said Brady Cass, senior vice president and general manager. Infinit has ties to another DeWitt-based leasing company, Continental Information Systems Corp., which went bankrupt in 1989. Seven of its executives are former CIS employees including Cerrone, Cass and Philip Taurisano, Infinit's principal owner. Though tax law changes and other problems sent CIS to an unfortunate end, Cerrone and Cass said working there was excellent preparation for running Infinit. "CIS was to me a great learning experience," said Cerrone. "I learned a lot about the leasing business." Brady said working at CIS taught him "where the niches are in product lines and how manufacturers introduce products." They learned one other thing from CIS, which was known for having luxurious office space. While its offices are modern, Infinit has not splurged on appointments. Cerrone's desk, like the phones the company sells, is used. "We didn't spend it on the marble," said Cerrone. "We didn't spend it on the granite. We spent it on our people."
